Surgery in virtual reality

A new paradigm for pedagogy

Virtual reality enables the use of immersive images for pedagogical ends.It democratizes and opens up access to situations and environments normally reserved for specialists.

This video was created at the request of a surgeon to enable plastic surgery students to become immersed in a blepharoplasty (eyelid) surgery. The different stages of the operation, from the patient’s arrival on the table to the post-operative checks can be followed in 360 degrees.

Dr. Natalie Rajaonarivelo performs blepharoplasty surgery on a patient.

Virtual reality has become essential in emancipating pedagogy from traditional linear constraints.

The spectator can watch the operation from multiple angles, changing their viewpoint and placing themselves to check the multiple elements of information captured in the 360-degree environment. This film was crafted to highlight the key moments in the operation with appropriate terminology. In contrast with 3D video, it is possible to juxtapose different views of the operation as it continues to unfold in real time.

The student and the interested practitioner can watch the video multiple times to take advantage of the complete suite of information contained in the film.
